Good times for VR?
January 18th 2013, 00:53 CET by TreeFrog

If you're anything like me (protip: don't be anything like me), you'll remember the short-lived VR craze with some hipster-grade ironic nostalgia, but mostly with disappointment. William Gibson had promised us digital otherworlds over a decade ago, and all we got was The Lawnmower Man. And that wasn't even a documentary, people!

But! Now some punk called Palmer Luckey, who has the temerity to be only 20 years old, is all like "hey, here's this Oculus Rift VR headset I just crapped out this morning and BTW it's the most awesome shit you peasants have ever seen" AND HE'S NOT WRONG.

AND! On top of that we have the Leap Motion guys and their millimetre-precision doodad taking a big enough crap on the Kinect that Asus are offering aforementioned doodad as an option with their PCs. We'll ignore the oh-so-90s Best Buy retail exclusivity.

Interesting times.

At least Sony seems to shooting for less exotic hardware/architecture which should be easier for developers this time around. Memory constraints seemed to be a real issue with the PS3.

Haha, I just remembered that they used to sell an 8bit computer (which was like, 1/2 the power of ZX Spectrum) that you had to assemble yourself, like a LEGO. Man, 1980s.

The only thing I remember about GameSpy was that you always had to cancel its installation and that there were some games that required it to run, even if you were never going to play online.
Oh, and I visited PlanetHalfLife a lot back in the day. But all the Planet* sites are now under IGN's banner.

The first "IBM Compatible" computer I ever bought had some bullshit OS on it called GEM. CP/M based I think it was.

What a rube I was leaving the store with that. I think i was able to wipe it and throw win 3 on it.

Witcher2 is well worth whatever you pay for it. It may not be an open world, but it is a fantastic ride and a very well put together one time through game.

I think I bought Kali to play Descent because I'm not sure if it did TCP/IP.  Not that I played much Descent online because ping times were terrible and DEAR GOD WHICH WAY IS UP?!

Used Kali a lot for HL/TFC/CS though, at least until Valve's server browser became more or less usable.

As for Gamespy... well I used to visit PlanetHalfLife a fair bit, but not for years and years now.  Which seems to be the story for a lot of people and probably why they're shutting down.  I suppose it's sad as the passing of internet history, but I'd be lying if I said they'll be missed.

Since this is apparently the Good times for Nostalgy? thread now - not that I mind, really - I fall waaay behind you guys as regards to access to Teh Intarnets... it happened back in '97, I think? I was looking for a] hi-res (read: VGA) pics of sexy little computers (by Acer, mostly), b] anything interesting I could find on the poorly protected university network next to us (both porn and handbooks for growing shrooms (that one misfired a bit...)), and c] trying to figure out the cultist's language in Blood... and that is the point where I discovered PlanetBlood, and the rest of the network (then still very much in its infancy).

I rather liked what they did to Doom in Doom 2, so if it's going to be anything like that, count me in - but if it will be a Q2 -> Q4 kinda sick, sick bastardization... ewww. Do we reckon a proper demo to make its appearance at this year's QuakeCon?

I'm very torn, love what I hear about the actual game, but it would mean installing Origin and I'm hearing very bad things about the server situation.

You know Gamespy really blew some opportunities in hindsight. They could have been a world-beater in at least two categories that are pretty good business models now.

First, they could have been where Wikia is now, in terms of providing a hosting framework for fan created wikis of all stripes. That is basically what their Planet*.com model was anyway.

Second, with the Gamespy middleware and server browser/friends list thing, they could have evolved into what Steam is now.

They had a huge lead in both of these areas, which was squandered after Surfas sold out to IGN.
#122 by Wudi
2013-03-10 22:35:07
Except the Gamespy browser was shit. There were a lot of better free alternatives.

And them trying to get it shoe horned/strong armed into every O-FPS game being made sucked for gamers.

Luckily, developers recognized it truly was shit and just starting making their own game browser/match making thingy and told Gamespy to go suck a nut.

Wudi the thing is increasingly they aren't making their own browser/match making and are just using steamworks. Granted I'm not sold on Gamespy being able to leverage just the middleware into a platform like that. Everyone else had games to push their platforms so Gamespy would have likely still been screwed as soon as TF2 and Battlefield 3 used their respective systems. The best result of doing that would have probably been a buy out by Valve years ago instead of IGN.

As for the Wikia thing I'm not sure that's long for this world either. First Steam has player guides now (although halfassed and mostly broken at the moment) while the ps4's social features are going to make doing annoying youtube guides much easier. Why contribute to a Wikia guide if I can just hit the share button, throw an ad in, and get paid myself?

Don't forget garnishes such as: Fish shaped solid waste.

I sort of recall some story leaking where GameSpy told the Developer or Publisher when they refused to incorporate GameSpy extortion into their game, That Gamespy threatened them the game would fail without Gamespy support. Said Dev or Pub still told them to fuck off and the game did well. Beginning of the end for their browser.

Woo!

I've picked up Crysis 2 again after becoming bored with it some time ago. It's grown on me a little but I still can't say I like it as much as Crysis. The graphics are beautiful but other than that it's afwully linear to the point where they need to have a 'press button to look at the scripted setpiece' quick time event.
In fact the gorgeous graphics make imperfections in other areas stand out more. The tasteful level design makes the invisible walls stand out like a sore thumb. And various physics and AI glitches are even harder to look past if the graphics are so good.

The gameplay is alright but it's only a shadow of Crysis. Most of the time it's the story of Half-Life 2 executed in CoD:MW style.
